My name is Darren White and I've always been fascinated by the way that a construction crew can erect a building so fast. I work in an industrial park and there's always new buildings being built and I see the progress every day. A few months ago, I was at a neighborhood picnic and I started talking to a neighbor that lived down the street. It just so happened that he was a contractor that worked on the buildings in the industrial park. I asked him how the construction crew could build a huge building so quickly and he explained the whole process to me. That's when I had the idea to write a blog to explain the building process to others who are also interested.

Got Some Cracks? 4 Reasons You Shouldn't Ignore Foundation Damage

If your home's foundation is damaged, you might think that you can postpone the repairs, especially if you're just dealing with minor cracks. Unfortunately, there's no such thing as minor cracks when it comes to foundation damage. Any damage to the foundation of your home should be taken seriously and repaired quickly. Here are several reasons you should have a contractor repair your damaged foundation as quickly as possible:

1. Protect Against Water Damage

If you have cracks in your foundation, your home is at an increased risk for water damage. Water that's absorbed into the soil can find its way up into your home through the cracks. The results can be particularly devastating during torrential rains or seasonal flooding. Not only that, but because moisture can find its way into your home through the cracks, you're at an increased risk for mold growth. If you develop mold growth in your carpeting, it will need to be replaced. Avoid the risk by having those cracks repaired quickly.

2. Prevent Pest Infestations

Pests are always on the lookout for an easy way into your home. If you have cracks in the foundation, they don't have to look too far. Those cracks will allow pests to come in right through the soil. This is particularly beneficial for spiders, ants, and roaches. In fact, if you have cracks in the foundation, you could have ants crawling around in your carpet fibers and not even know it.

3. Reduce Energy Loss

If you've got a few cracks in your foundation, you may be losing energy in your home. A cracked foundation can't keep your home protected against the elements, especially during temperature extremes. When the soil freezes during the winter, the cold will seep right up through the cracks, making your home colder than it needs to be. You'll also have problems during the summer when heat is absorbed through the cracks in your foundation. Reduce the energy loss by keeping your foundation in good repair.

4. Avoid Devaluation

If you're going to be refinancing your home or putting it on the market, you want to make sure that you get a fair appraisal. Unfortunately, that won't happen if you have foundation damage. In fact, a cracked foundation can keep you from selling or refinancing your home altogether. Avoid property devaluation by repairing foundation damage before you attempt to refinance or sell your home.
